My Mum's company have recently opened up a new pharmacy in
Golders Green, and recently they had an event where high end make up products
were heavily discounted (more on those at a later date). We went along to the
event after work, and then had to find somewhere to grab a bite to eat having
spent ALL our money at the pharmacy (we were like children in a sweet shop).
Golders Green isn't a part of the city I have ever ventured
to before, so we had no idea what would be good. However, I'd done some
lunchtime reading earlier that day and found Likya. It had great reviews on
Tripadvisor, which is always a deciding factor for me, and when we walked up
outside we saw ALL the tables were rammed and the restaurant was actually
award-winning. So of course we had to get a table.
The food is from Anatolian origin. On doing some
research, food from this part of the world is influenced by Turkey and Asia, so
the mix is a kind of fusion. I was extremely excited.
We went for the hummus and bread to start, and the plate of hot meze starters, which are perfect to share between two. You get lots of different little things, from pastries filled with spinach and cheese, to samosas, halloumi, olives, chorizo and some other cooked meats. It was a nice way to try a few different things. The hummus was also really flavoursome, and IMO you can never have too much hummus. I could live off the stuff. You also got a pot of minty garlic sauce and one of chilli sauce to add to the dishes, which were great with both the starters and mains.
For mains, we decided to share two things. Mum chose the doner kebab, which came with loads of salad and mixed meats. I went for one of their specials, which was marinated chicken pieces in a tomato sauce, with a butter sauce and yoghurt, all on toasted bread. It was really rich, but again really flavoursome and tasty; the meat was soft and the flavours all complimented each other (I added some chilli sauce for the piece de resistance!)
The portions here are HUGE. We definitely didn't even really need two mains to share, but the prices are so reasonable and everything looked so tasty. If we go back again I plan to have the mixed meat kebabs, which I spied on someone else's table and looked incredible.
The restaurant also does takeaway, so if you're in that
neighbourhood and fancy some absolutely delicious food but can't be bothered to
get out of your onesie, or if you're in that neck of the woods anyway, I'd
highly recommend Likya if you haven't already been!
