A few weeks ago the girls and I did something a little different for my pre-birthday dinner and went to BOBO Social on Charlotte Street. On normal nights, the restaurant is a burger/cocktail restaurant, but on Mondays they hold the 'Experimental Burger Society.' For £25 you get a night with the restaurant's head chef, you make and eat your own burger, and a cocktail is also thrown in. Sound good? Read on.
We arrived to the restaurant late (standard) but it actually worked quite well for us because we got our own little alcove booth covered in fairy lights at the back of the room. You're given a board, a bowl of ingredients, and the utensils, and a cocktail (ours was a delightful Sex on the Beach).
After introductions, the head chef gets to work showing you how to make the burger of that week. When you book, you can see what the burger is so can choose the week with the one you want to make! Ours was chimmichuri – parsley, cayenne powder, garlic, chilli, red onion, olive oil and vinegar. After seeing him slice onions faster than you can say burger, we went back to our tables and got to work creating our own chimmi churi. The staff and chef come round and have a chat and check how you're doing, and it's so easy to do that I'll definitely be making it again at home.
Then came my favourite part – the meat. On offer was antelope, ostrich and beef. Both antelope and ostrich are quite lean meats, so you are encouraged to use some beef which has a 20-25% fat content. However it was great for the two other girls who can't eat beef, because they still got to eat a 'red meat' burger. They encourage you to make the burger around 180g, and I went for 80% beef and 20% ostrich. It was quite unoriginally named 'The Moo-Bird.' Then off it went to the oven and out came the red wine – the perfect Malbec to accompany the red meat.
Our burgers arrived about 20 minutes later with a perfectly toasted 'B' burger bun. We then went up to the front to add our salad (lettuce, tomato and gherkins) and garlic mayo (divine) and came back to add the chimmi churi, before devouring our burgers. It was honestly one of the best burgers I've ever eaten (although I think it would have nabbed the top spot if it was slightly rarer) that I hardly had time to take this picture before it had all gone. Nikita said it was the best burger she'd ever eaten. Result! They also bring you chips and sweet potato fries to accompany your burgers. Whilst these aren't the best I've ever had, they were good nonetheless.
Every week the head chef chooses a winner based on the name and the percentage of meats they chose. On our week the winner had 60% beef and 40% antelope (and I can't remember the name – put that down to too much wine!) That burger is then featured on the menu for the rest of that week. Cool huh?
After more wine (and the girls had a couple of dessert cocktails – word of warning, they are very strong!) we left the restaurant clutching our food babies. But not before we went to the ladies room. How cute is it?!
I really recommend a Monday at Bobo Social. A great start to the working week.
